Lopud
We woke and raced down the quarter-mile descent of steep steps into the nearby Dubrovnik marina and hopped aboard the commuter ferry to the isle of Lopud.
The first sight when entering the harbor of Lopud is the immense sea wall and 30m-high bell tower of a 15th-century monastery.
We stopped for our morning coffee, taking in the stone houses and fortress ruins to our right and the sea to our left before trekking across the spine of the island to get to sandy Šunj Beach. Lopud is car-free but golf carts abound, so rather than walk the entire way we opted for the 20-kuna golf cart ride (~$2) and passed an orchard of cypress, carob, and olive trees while pleasantly rolling along.
Under the shadows of palm fronds, we lazed the rest of the day away on rented loungers, moving languorously down the beach to lunch and back. Ahhhhh.
