Copenhagen continued
More photos from our time in Copenhagen. I cannot wait to return.
Freetown Christiania. Green, car-free, and autonomous. This society-within-a-society is totally mind-boggling to walk through ("Pusher St." - need I say more?). Christiania was established in the 1970s by a group of hippies who overtook abandoned military barracks and developed their own laws independent of Denmark. Note the sign when leaving that reads "You are now entering the EU". Vibrant and gritty but so fascinating.
This stop in Copenhagen would NOT have been the same without the help of our friends Nick and Amy. They acted as our impromptu city guides and made our time here so special. THANK YOU!!!
Tróndur Patursson's Cosmic Universe (2002): We happened upon an art installation while taking a peek at the world-famous restaurant Noma's old location in Christianshavn. They are closed while preparing the new location nearer to Christiania (fortunately for our wallets). Supposedly they averaged 20,000 calls on the one day each month that they took reservations (!!!).
From the outside the installation is unremarkable if not mysterious: two grey igloos attached to one another, one small and one large. But step inside, remove your shoes, and become immersed in a cosmic and seemingly infinite space of mirrors, glass and blue. I could have spent hours inside this meditative space.
More from Nyhavn, Copenhagen's colorful 17th century waterfront and canal.
Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro
This is SO up my alley: yes, this is a cemetery for a large number of Danish notables (such as Niels Bohr (!!!) and Hans Christian Andersen) but this cemetery also serves as an important greenspace for Copenhagen!!! The burial areas are separate from the more park-like areas but folks do picnic amongst graces (respectfully, of course). Totally gorgeous.
