Our portal to Croatia: we arrived late at night, travel-worn and weary, to a city beckoning us to join the crowd of late-night revelers. The morning sun revealed our first glimpse of the Dalmatian coast in daylight and the glittering turquoise of the Adriatic. The historic center of Split is the ancient Roman emperor Diocletian’s Palace and has a continuity of life for something like 17 centuries and counting, but the city changed hands constantly throughout history. Eclectic, bustling, enduring. Life goes on…
